👨💻 Unitel STEAM HUB: Empowering Mongolia’s Next-Gen Engineers

Mongolia’s leading telecommunications operator, Unitel Group, has launched the Unitel STEAM HUB, which has now become a nationwide education initiative.
⚙️ What Is the Unitel STEAM HUB?
Since its inception in 2022, Unitel’s initiative has built a network of STEAM learning centers across all 21 provinces of Mongolia as well as in the peripheral district of Ulaanbaatar. The first learning hub opened in Darkhan-Uul Province in 2022, followed by rapid expansion that now covers the entire country, from Bayan-Ulgii in the far west, approximately 1,500 km from the capital, to Nalaikh District on the city’s eastern edge, just 33 km from Ulaanbaatar.
👀 Originally offering 2 core subjects, robotics coding and electrical circuits, the program has grown to deliver 5 distinct course types across ten skill levels, catering to a wide diversity of interests and abilities.
🤔 Why STEAM Education Matters?
STEAM learning equips students with critical 21st-century skills, logical reasoning, creativity, digital fluency, problem-solving, and teamwork. These skills are essential in a world driven by technology and innovation. While Mongolia’s STEAM infrastructure is still developing compared to global leaders, programs like Unitel STEAM HUB are expanding access to future-ready skills, especially in rural areas.
❤️🔥 Built to ignite Mongolia’s next generation of engineers, the initiative has already established 22 fully equipped STEAM centers, trained 28 certified instructors, delivered core STEAM education to 3,144 students, and reached more than 65,000 people through community events and open-access services.
🏆 Triumphs in International Robotics
Worth mentioning, Unitel STEAM HUB students competed for the first time in the Enjoy AI robotics and coding competition, held in over 50 countries, bringing home one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal for Mongolia. Furthermore, at the 2025 national championship, STEAM HUB students excelled, placing in 9 of 18 award categories and securing 4 of 6 spots to represent Mongolia globally.
Overall… The success of Unitel STEAM HUB reflects the growing strength and reach of Mongolia’s STEAM education, bridging urban-rural gaps and inspiring engagement beyond the classroom. As part of this ongoing commitment, Unitel Group’s staff continues a 6-year tradition of sending New Year gifts to children studying and living in remote provinces, having previously reached over 1,800 children. This year, the tradition continues with gifts sent to students of Unitel STEAM HUB in all 21 provinces.

🇲🇳🧶 Cashmere Sector Struggles to Attract Young Talent

Mongolia’s cashmere industry, a globally recognized sector, faces a growing challenge as it fails to attract and retain young workers. Despite its international reputation, many positions in the industry struggle to appeal to the next generation, putting the sector’s long-term sustainability at risk.
📊 Survey Insights: What Youth Want
A survey conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) under the Youth Employment Promotion Project (YEPP) and funded by the ILO-Korea Partnership Programme (I-KORP) examined nearly 600 young workers and prospective employees between March and November 2025. Findings revealed 10%–20% labor shortages and high early turnover. Crucially, youth prioritize skill development, supportive workplaces, and low-stress environments over higher wages.
🛠️ Finding Solutions: From Workshop to Action
Last November, government, employers, and worker representatives discussed practical steps to boost youth employment in Mongolia’s cashmere sector, including improved HR practices, skills development, and smoother school-to-work transitions.
🚀 5 enterprises piloted the ILO SCORE program, showing early gains in organization, communication, and productivity, with plans to expand youth-focused initiatives across the sector from 2026.
💡 Expert Insight: More Than Wages
Shin Hochul, Chief Technical Adviser of I-KORP, emphasizes, “Decent work is about more than wages. To attract and retain young talent, enterprises must invest in skills, foster collaboration, and create safe, supportive workplaces where youth can grow.”
Finally… Through these initiatives, Mongolia’s cashmere sector can maintain its global reputation while becoming a career destination for young workers, ensuring competitiveness and sustainability for the future.
